Gas prices have come down considerably but most people would still like to have a $100 gas gift card at their disposal.

That’s exactly what a lucky Relay for Life team captain will get when his or her name is drawn from a “pot” of team captains’ names.

Kay Franklin, American Cancer Society community representative, said the gas gift card is simply an added incentive to attend the Pike County Relay for Life team captains’ registration at noon on Thursday, Nov. 13 at Bush Memorial Baptist Church.

The team captains will have their names entered in a drawing for the gas gift card and new team captains will have their names entered twice. The drawing will be held in January.

“The team captains’ meeting is an opportunity for team captains to come together and learn more about Relay for Life,” Franklin said. “Our goal is to have teams from all communities in Pike County participate in the 2009 Pike County Relay for Life campaign. I don’t know of a single person who has not been affected in some way by cancer. We want to do all that we can to help find a cure for this devastating disease and we need the help of all Pike Countians.”

Franklin said teams are “ideally” made up of 10 members who pledge to raise $100 each.

“But a team of any size is welcome to participate,” she said. “We invite anyone who is interested in helping to find a cure for cancer to be a part of the 2009 Relay for Life campaign.”

Pike County businesses, churches, schools, clubs, organizations and individuals join the fight against cancer each year.

“We have teams that “relay” every year and every year we have new teams,” Franklin said. “And, we have teams that drop out for a year or two and come back. In 2008, we had 37 teams. This year, we would like to have many more than that. And, if each community gets involved, we could have one of the biggest fundraising years ever.”

Team captains who have already been “elected” are encouraged to attend the meeting on Nov. 13. Those who are interested in forming a team are also encouraged to attend.

“It’s not too early to begin to Relay,” Franklin said. “In fact, with the holidays coming up, it’s a great time for bake sales and craft sales.

“A lot of us don’t want to bake for the holidays and would welcome the opportunity to buy a cake or pie and support the American Cancer Society at the same time.”

Ideas for fundraisers will be discussed at the team captains’ meeting on Nov. 13 and each team captain in attendance will have his or her name entered in the drawing.
