Pike County voters, get ready to make history.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, and local election officials have been preparing for a turnout that could break records.

“We’ve been working pretty steadily for the last several days,” said Probate Judge Bill Stone, who is the Pike County election manager.

Heated races on the national, state and local level, along with a history-making presidential race has voter interest high.

“Either way we vote in the presidential election, history’s going to be changed, so I’m definitely excited about that,” said Kelsey Rodgers of Troy, who will vote for the first time today.

Across the country, some early voters last weekend had to wait in lines up to six hours long. But Stone said the county will avoid that.

“I anticipate lines. We’ve had lines before, but they’re not two to three hours because we just don’t have that many people here,” Stone said.

“We’re always encouraging voter turnout, but the downside to that, if there is one, is you might have to wait.”

Stone said extra poll workers and additional voter tables have been added to larger precincts to hopefully eliminate long waits.

In order to vote, residents must bring a form of approved identification.

ID ranging from driver’s licenses to utility bills will permit entrance to the polls.
