Mr. Leon Carter was born in a small rural community in Pike County, on February 25, 1950, to Mr. Q. P. Carter and Mrs. Ruby McGowan Carter. He was one of eight children. His parents and one brother, Mr. James W. Carter, preceded him in death.
Leon received his formal education at former Hill Crest High School, a segregated black public school located in Brundidge.
Leon started working when he was 16. He worked for years at Coca Cola Bottling Company and later at HB&, often trying his hand at farming.
Because of his mother’s moral principles, Christian values, and what she taught her children, early in life he learned to be a good Christian. As a youth, he attended Macedonia Baptist Church where he served as junior deacon.
While still a youth, he joyfully joined Antioch Baptist Church.
In 1974, he married the former Willa Dean Burney, a sincere Christian woman from Brundidge who became his mate for life. They were married for 35 years. They were blessed with one son. He was proud of his family. He was devoted to his wife, son, grandchildren, extended family and the community.
Throughout the years, he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed grilling, hunting, fishing, gardening and driving. He loved a good story often times reminiscing about humorous past family events.
On October 25, 2008, Leon’s life expired leaving behind a multitude of memories for those who loved him.
