MONROE, La. — With their backs against the wall the Troy Trojan soccer team once again came out victorious, this time against ULM in women’s soccer action Sunday by a score of 2-0.

With the win Troy stays alive in the chase for the final spots in the SBC Soccer Championship scheduled for November 5-8 in Denton, Texas. The Trojans still need a win over Friday’s opponent South Alabama to increase their chances.

“I think we are going with the approach that we are taking it one game at a time and we’ll see where we end up,” Bentley said.

Troy and ULM battled throughout the first half to a scoreless tie at the intermission, but the Trojans started the scoring in the latter period, breaking the tie with a 69th minute goal.

Brooke Smith set up Jill Pinder for her team-leading 14th goal of the season just before the 70 minute mark. The assist was Smith’s first of the year.

Troy (8-9-2) picked up another goal from Nicole Targa in the 88th minute to seal the victory. The score was her third of 2008.

“I thought we didn’t put forth our best effort, but we played good enough to win. I felt like we had some good individual efforts that helped the team step up to win the game. Both Jill and Nicole scored at critical times that helped us solidify the game,” head coach Chris Bentley said.

Goalkeeper Ashley Branham was impressive in the net once again recording her sixth shutout of her freshman season. Branham recorded five saves in a full 90 minutes of work.

The victory was the Trojans’ first over the Warhawks in school history, Troy’s first win in four tries. The victory combined with Friday’s win over Louisiana Lafayette is the first time the Trojans have swept a SBC weekend road set since joining in 2005.

Troy will travel to Mobile, Ala. to face South Alabama on Friday, October 31 in their final regular season match of 2008. For more information stay tuned to TroyTrojans.com.
