Maestri informs Troy Rotary about Trojans

In his annual get together with the Troy Rotary Club Tuesday afternoon, Troy head men’s basketball coach Don Maestri kept the crowd awake with some jokes, talked about the 2008 season and made sure the Rotarians knew what to expect when they walk through the doors at Trojan Arena this fall.

“I started reading this book called ’90 Minutes in Heaven’ last spring and it really motivated me,” Maestri said. “In the book the man is told that he needs to not worry about what he can’t do and start thinking of what you can do. I started writing things down last spring.”

Maestri said the Trojans will have a new style this year and he wants to know exactly what makes the other teams in the Sun Belt tick.

“I want to know the other teams inside and out,” Maestri said. “My goal is to go back to the NCAA tournament. You hear about coaches that are fired all the time, but there is one thing to realize. We have won five championships here, but we won four of those in five years after we had two or three bad years.”

Maestri made sure to let the crowd know that they will get their money’s worth if they buy season tickets to see the Trojans.

Maestri’s teams have a 229-71 at Trojan Arena in Maestri’s 26 years at the helm of the Trojans.

The Trojans open play at home in an exhibition with West Alabama Nov. 10 and the regular season starts Nov. 15 with a home game against UAB.
