The Pike Liberal Arts School Lady Patriots made it to the second round of the AISA Class AA, Region 1 tournament Monday, but ran into the wall that is the Morgan Academy Lady Senators.

Pike lost 3-0 (27-29, 20-25, 16-25) after outlasting Fort Dale 3-2 (20-25, 25-19, 12-25, 25-15, 20-18) in the first round of the tournament.

“They came together as a team and pulled that one out after dropping two of the first three sets,” PLAS head coach Mendy Avant said. “It was back-and-forth all match and we eventually won it.”

But Avant said the Lady Senators were just too much for Pike to handle in the second match of the day Monday.

“They just outhit us,” Avant said. “They played well and we couldn’t cover their hitters. But we had a good season and I am proud of how the girls fought this year.”

Avant said the year has been good for the Lady Patriots and they will build upon what they started this year when the 2009 season opens up.

“Our season was good, but we still need to work on meshing as one out there on the floor in the offseason,” Avant said.
