Shirley Marie Flanders, age 67, of Birmingham, Alabama, died Wednesday, October 8, 2008. She served as the first Director of Nursing for the Troy Regional Edge Hospital in Troy, Alabama and later taught nursing at Troy State University. She was a 1962 graduate of Birmingham Baptist Hospital School of Nursing. The family will receive friends at Southern Heritage Funeral Home on Saturday, October 13, 2008 at 10 A.M. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 11 A.M. in the Chapel of Southern Heritage. Burial will follow in Southern Heritage Cemetery.
Survivors include Walt Flanders, Jr. husband of 43 years; her mother, Lora Underwood, of Birmingham; two brothers, Bob Underwood (Shirley) and Frank Underwood, Jr. (Betty); her four sisters, Dorothy Underwood of Birmingham, Mary Hanna (Ken) of Katy, Texas, Patricia Baker (Bob) ofBirmingham, and Liz Elliott of Birmingham; and many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Frank J. Underwood; a sister, Elaine Baulos; her father and mother-in-law, Walt and May Flanders; and her brother-in-law, David Flanders.
