The Charles Henderson Trojans got a much needed victory on Friday night against the Rehobeth Rebels, 28-14. The Trojans broke a three-game losing streak with the win, and kept themselves in a tight playoff race within AHSAA Class 5A, Region 2.

“It feels great to get back in the win column,” Trojans head coach Hugh Fountain said. “We had momentum the entire first half until they scored, but we came out in the second half and took care of business.”

The Trojans (4-3, 3-2 AHSAA Class 5A, Region 2) led the Rebels 21-0 after scoring their third touchdown of the night on a 22-yard Jawara White touchdown reception with just 25 seconds left in the half.

Kicker Dustin Smith sent the kickoff sailing into the end zone, and the Rebels (1-6, 0-5) set up shop on their own 20-yard line.

Rebel quarterback Justin Devane sent a deep pass sailing that connected with receiver James Cummings as the first half clock ran out. Cummings broke free past K.D. Edenfield and raced for a Rebels touchdown.

The Trojans led 21-7, but momentum strongly favored the Rebels going to the locker room.

“Our players were real focused tonight,” Fountain said.

The Trojans came out in the second half and punched in their fourth touchdown with 3:11 left in the third quarter. Edenfield punched in his third touchdown of the night.

That was virtually the finishing blow on the Rebels in a game that was more spread out than the scoreboard revealed.

Rehobeth put together an 80-yard drive against the Trojans in the fourth quarter that ended with a touchdown, leading to the final score of 28-14.

“It feels great to win especially after losing three straight,” Edenfield said. “We just haven’t been playing well lately. Hopefully this will get us going on a run to the playoffs.”

The Trojans are a step closer to making the playoffs with the win, but games against Carroll and Eufaula will decide the Trojans postseason fate.

“We knew we had to get it done tonight,” running back Billy Neal said.

Neal caught 39 yards worth of passes and ran for almost 30 yards, but Neal’s presence on the field kept Rehobeth guessing.

“We had to turn things around tonight,” Neal said. “I knew we could do it, but don’t forget about what a great job our offensive line did.”

White led the offense with 108 reception yards and 20 yards rushing. Senior running back Lequintez Reynolds led the ground attack with 41 yards rushing. Corey Dennis caught two passes for 79 yards.

“We told our players to keep intensity on every play tonight good or bad,” Fountain said.

The Trojans road to the playoffs only gets tougher, and they will certainly need that intensity against Carroll next Friday.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Movie Gallery Stadium in Troy.
