Trojans remain winless in Sun Belt

MOBILE — Meghan Gilroy and Aubre Smith combined for 20 kills, but it wasn’t enough as the Troy Trojans fell to the University of South Alabama 3-1 in Sun Belt Conference action Monday night at Jaguar Gymnasium.

The Trojans dropped their fifth consecutive conference match to South Alabama 21-25, 25-19, 17-25, 18-25 despite another double-double by sophomore Megan Henderson and the double-digit kills of Gilroy and Smith.

After dropping the first set 25-21, Troy (9-11, 0-5 Sun Belt) battled back to win the second set by six points after the two teams were tied at 9-all in the early stages of the set. A service ace by South Alabama’s Juliana Almeida started a 3-0 run by the Lady Jags to push their lead to 12-9, however, Troy battled back to tie the set at 18-all and took the lead on a a block. The block by Smith and Henderson gave Troy a 20-19 lead in the set, and the lead was pushed to 21-19 on another block by the duo.

The Trojans scored the last four points of the match, started with a kill from Henderson and finished off with a pair of kills by Smith.

Troy hit .085 as a team with 43 kills on the night, while South Alabama hit .221 with 48 total kills.

The Trojans also recorded 59 digs and seven blocks, while South Alabama recorded 47 digs and 12 total blocks.

Henderson posted another double-double with 33 assists and 11 digs, while Gilroy and Smith recorded 10 kills each in the loss.

Meghan Washlow and Emily Strader recorded 10 digs each in the loss.

Troy returns to action Thursday night on the road against Louisiana-Monroe, the second of four consecutive road matches for the Trojans.
