Unbeaten Redskins

Troy’s Redskins of the Dale County Football Association’s Varsity League are the top team in the standings right now. The Redskins got a big win against Brundidge last Monday night, and they are excited about how much they improved from week one to week two.

“It feels so good to be on top,” quarterback Mondaris Dixon said. “I liked being in the pocket and scrambling away from them.”

Dixon led a touchdown drive that ended as the first-half clock expired.

Dixon hit Rod Roberson on a touchdown pass to put the Redskins in control of the game.

“We had to score,” Dixon said.

Roberson knew where to be to catch the ball, and he did.

“I thought I was going to miss it,” Roberson said. “I caught it though.”

The players are certain that this is a huge rivalry between them and Brundidge, and the Redskins are happy they came out victorious.

“It’s a big rivalry like Charles Henderson and Pike County,” Roberson said.

The Redskins had to work on blocking from their first game, and they were proud of the way they blocked against Brundidge.

“I made some really big blocks,” tight end Sterling Foster said. “We did it tonight!”

The blocking paid off for them in their running game, and they said they hope it continues.

“I was running through the hole all night,” running back Marquis Simmons said. “It felt great getting first downs on them. We’re the No. 1 team, and we feel good.”

Troy coach Darius Carlisle has deep roots in the Troy-Brundidge rivalry. Carlisle is from Brundidge, and he coached against some good friends of his Monday.

“It feels good to beat them,” Carlisle said. “We blocked a lot better tonight. We had all 24 guys step up to the plate tonight and play ball. Bundidge is a very good team. This win should put us in first place, and we’re real proud of that. I was glad to see our team come together tonight. As a team, we did excellent.”

The Redskins are undefeated so far, and they will look to stay perfect again tomorrow night.
