The Pike County Bulldogs got back to playing as a team, and as a result they got back to winning Friday night. PCHS snapped a two-game losing streak with a 25-19 victory over Abbeville on the road.

“Obviously, I am proud of how our kids played as a team,” PCHS head coach Brad Waggoner said. “They believed in each other. It wasn’t pretty, but it was a real team effort.”

Pike (3-3, 3-1 AHSAA Class 3A, Region 2) got production from sources that have not been tapped so far this year.

“We had some guys step up tonight that have not stepped up all year,” Waggoner said. “We had some guys in different positions and they really responded. Tevin Andrews had his best game of the season tonight. Josue Rodriguez made some great plays out there and Melvin Lampley played good on the line for not having been out there much all season.”

Andrews, Pike’s senior wide receiver/defensive back, scored the last two touchdowns for the Bulldogs in the game. He caught a 48-yard bomb from junior quarterback Josh Parker in the third quarter and sealed the win for PCHS in the fourth quarter with an 88-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

He had three receptions for 75 yards and a score, two interceptions and four tackles in the game.

Rodriguez, the Bulldogs’ junior linebacker, caused the fumble that Andrews scooped up, he had an interception that stalled an Abbeville drive at the Pike six yard line and added three tackles.

Waggoner said the best part about the win was how the players fed off each other and played as a team.

For the first time this year, Waggoner went into the game planning to use Parker and junior tailback CC Griffin under center. He said both did a good job of running the offense from the quarterback position.

Parker opened the scoring in the first quarter with a two-yard quarterback sneak into the end zone. A true PAT gave Pike a 7-0 lead.

Abbeville answered on the ensuing kickoff, taking it back 80 yards for a score. The Bulldogs blocked the PAT and held onto a 7-6 lead. Griffin padded the PCHS lead with a five-yard touchdown reception from Parker later in the quarter.

Griffin had 15 carries for 67 yards and he also caught two balls for 22 yards, including a five-yard touchdown.

The Yellow Jackets cut the lead to one again on a screen pass. The Bulldogs took a 13-12 lead into halftime after a missed PAT, but Abbeville took their first lead of the game on the first play from scrimmage in the second half. A 70-yard run and good PAT gave the Yellow Jackets a 19-13 advantage.

Parker connected with Andrews for a 48-yard touchdown later in the third and Andrews’ scoop and score was the final score of the game with about seven minutes to play in the game.

Waggoner was glad to get out of Abbeville with a win, but it was the way his team won that made him the most proud of them.

“This was definitely a team effort,” he said. “It was good to see them pull together and get a win in a back-and-forth game. There was no quit in them tonight and this was a whole different team than we fielded last week.”

PCHS senior Elijah Caple led the way with 11 tackles on defense, junior Spencer Bright had 10 tackles and sophomore Deion Nickson had seven tackles.

Pike County won the yardage battle, 282-245 and the turnover battle, 4-1.

Daleville took out Slocumb Friday night as well, so the Bulldogs are still alive in the hunt for another region title. The Bulldogs’ next step in the process is a regional home game against Dale County next Friday on Homecoming. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
