Services for Terrell L. Slayton, Jr., 61, who died September 27, 2008 in Atlanta, Georgia will be at 11 a.m., October 4, 2008 at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Nathaniel Griffin officiating.
Burial will be in Carroll Street Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Harrison Funeral Home of Troy.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the church.
Terrell was born October 15, 1946 in Troy where he joined Bethel at a young age. Growing up, Terrell was always active, particularly in sports, politics and his community. His early schooling was completed at Academy Street High School where he had many friends and excelled academically. He was a renowned member of the graduating class of 1964. At Alabama A& University, he was an outstanding baseball player and a standout on the University’s golf team. The university awarded Mr. Slayton its Outstanding Alumnus Citation and Distinguished Service Award for service to his Alma Mater. Mr. Slayton’s long, distinguished career in government service culminated in his appointment as the Assistant Secretary of State for the state of Georgia. Upon his retirement from State government, he became president and CEO of The Slayton Group, a local consulting firm. Terrell’s outgoing personality and extraordinary caring and compassion for others drove a tireless commitment to the Atlanta Community. He served of the Boards of numerous organizations including the United Way, Leadership Atlanta, Georgia Communities, in Schools, the Morehouse Research Institute, The Georgia Legislative Black Caucus and the Minority Advisory Board of the Red Cross. He was also a Mason and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity but
Terrell’s pride and joy came from his membership in 100 Black Men of Atlanta and his work with the organization’s “Project Success”. During the last year of his life, he served as President of 100 Black Men of Atlanta.
Terrell L. Slayton, Jr. leaves to celebrate his life and cherish his memory, a step father, Mr. Leon Matthews who nurtured and guided him from childhood through adulthood; wife, Mildred W. Slayton; daughter, Teresa D. and Andrew Williams of Cincinnati, Ohio; stepson, Carl Daniels, Jr. of Mobile; adopted son, Tyrone Slayton of Cincinnati; adopted daughter, Alphia Stephens of Illinois, three brothers, Wayne Matthews of Indianapolis, Indiana, Stanley Matthews of Huntsville and Jason Matthews of New York City; two sisters, Donzella Richardson of Huntsville and Pamela and Thomas Daniels of Lithonia Georgia; grand-daughter, Alexis B. Williams and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who are dear but too many to list here.
