Louisiana Tech scored early and then played keep-away as they defeated Troy 1-0 to take home the title at the inaugural Troy Trojans Soccer Classic.

The Techsters (6-2) got a 21st minute goal from Kristen Sevier and then packed in up to 10 defenders at times to keep the Trojans out of the box and limit their shots on goal. For the game, Louisiana Tech outshot Troy (5-2-2) by a total of 13-6.

“We did not play a good game today. Louisiana Tech scored and made the best of their opportunity,” head coach Chris Bentley said.

La. Tech keeper Cat Buchanan notched three saves and Ashley Branham picked up five saves of her own as the Trojans were shutout for the first time in 2008.

After winning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week and garnering national recognition from Soccerbuzz.com, sophomore Jill Pinder was held in check in both games on the weekend. She failed to attempt a shot against her former team.

Pinder transfered to Troy in January following her freshman season with the Lady Techsters.

Kate Heilich paced the Trojans with three shots, none on goal. Only three Troy shots were on goal in the Sunday afternoon contest.

The Trojans next action will be on Friday when they host Arkansas-Little Rock to kick-off the Sun Belt Conference schedule. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
