There was an extra-point second set loss thrown in the middle, but the Goshen Lady Eagles swept the season series with Pike County High School on the volleyball court Thursday night in Goshen.

The Lady Eagles (3-4) came away with a 2-1 (25-16, 30-32, 15-11) victory.

“We really needed a win to boost the morale of the team,” GHS head coach Dee Hughes said. “It was a good victory for us, but we need to work on our fundamentals because we almost gave one away tonight. But we came back and rallied for the win.”

Junior Diamond Cottrell was the catalyst for Goshen, with five kills and four service aces in the match.

“Diamond was our playmaker tonight and it was good to see her play so well,” Hughes said.

The Lady Eagles breezed through the first set, 25-16. They never led by less than three points after grabbing a 7-4 lead. The second set was a different story, as Pike County kept the set close and pushed the set to extra points and eventually won, 32-30.

“That second game was great and if we would have come to play in the first game we would not have had to come back,” PCHS head coach Kasey Parker said. “But we just could not get a serve across tonight. It just wasn’t working for us.”

Goshen took the final set and the match, 15-11. Junior Alisha Whitaker opened the final frame with four aces for the Lady Eagles.

“She had those four aces right off the bat and she did a good job tonight,” Hughes said. “She was a key for us in the final set and I was proud of her.”

Jasmine Jones came off the bench for GHS and had three kills in four attempts. Caneshia Whatley chipped in nine aces and the Lady Eagles had 25 aces in the match as a team.

Pike County’s JV took the JV match, 2-0 (25-20, 25-17), but Hughes said she was proud of her JV.

Sydney Sullivan had 10 aces for the Lady Eagles and Samori May had 12 points on her serve.

Goshen hits the road for a match against Red Level Sept. 22.

Pike County will head to Zion Chapel Sept. 23.
