Thousands of American flags will cover the quad at Troy University today as a solemn tribute to the thousands of people killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorists attacks.

Students today will mark the anniversary of the terrorist attacks with a special ceremony on the quad at noon.

The second annual event was organized by the university’s chapter of the College Republicans, but it is not about politics said chairman Kristen Carter.

“This is a day for us to come together as Americans and remember,” Carter said.

The event was open to all who wanted to attend.

The Quad will be covered with American flags in memory of the 3,000 people who were killed in the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 in New York City, Washington, D.C. and rural Pennsylvania.

“The flags represent the lives we lost on that day, and anyone can come donate their time to help us put them out,” she said.

The city of Troy will observe the anniversary of the attacks with a display of flags at Bicentennial Park.
