Trojans crush Nicholls State

Jill Pinder broke the action open Tuesday afternoon with three goals in a six-minute span to continue her assault on the Troy single season scoring record, as the Trojans took down Nicholls State 10-0 at the Troy Soccer Complex.

Pinder, a sophomore midfielder for the Trojans, now has seven goals and is five goals away from breaking Courtney Reeder’s record of 11 set in 2001.

No matter how many goals she scores, Pinder is only worried about keeping the team unbeaten streak alive.

“We knew they would stay high and we just had to find the through ball,” Pinder said. “We are just trying to keep the streak alive.”

Troy (3-0-2) dominated Nicholls State throughout and led 4-0 at the half on Pinder’s three goals and freshman forward Mary Morris’ one goal. Morris also finished the game with a hat trick.

“I was really excited when I got that first goal because it was my first of the season,” Morris said. “I had to jump up a little bit on that one. We have been working hard and our team will continue to go after this year.”

After 13 minutes of no scoring, Pinder unleashed two goals within 1:30 and added another at the 19:14 mark in the first half. Morris put one past the goalie at 21:31 and Troy entered the half up 4-0.

Troy head coach Chris Bentley said it was good to see two hat tricks in one game.

“Both of those girls are deserving of that,” Bentley said. “They both work so hard all the time.”

Kate Heilich, Bridget Duke, Mandy Miley and Evelyn Keith each scored one goal and Miley, Duke, Rudi Rodriguez, Jenny Smith, Katie Cooper and Laura Hopson each had an assist in the game.

Troy hosts Jacksonville State Friday at 3 p.m. at the Troy Soccer Complex.
