Jennifer Sikes’ Charles Henderson Lady Trojans did something they have never done under her leadership in seven years Thursday night in Troy.

The Lady Trojans took down Northview High School 3-2 (25-22, 25-15, 18-25, 13-25, 15-7) for their second win of the season.

“We have come close to beating them (Northview) in the past, but we could never quite pull it off,” Sikes, the Lady Trojans’ head coach, said.

Needless to say, the Lady Trojans (2-3) were ecstatic about their victory.

“I can tell you that the 11 girls on our team were on cloud nine when they left that gym,” Sikes said. “The girls told me that is where they want to stay.”

The Lady Trojans surged out to a two-game lead in the match.

“They came out with all cylinders clicking and they were playing great,” Sikes said. “It did not matter who I put out there. I was able to use all my subs and they were playing great.”

But the third and fourth games took the Lady Trojans down a slippery slope.

“We have had a tendency in the past to go flat after a hot start and we did just that in the third and fourth games,” Sikes said. “I pulled them all aside and had a heart-to-heart with them and they decided they wanted to come out winners.”

That heart-to-heart left the Lady Trojans with two options.

“I told them they had two choices,” Sikes said. “They could either dig deep in their gut and come out winners or they could give up and just not care. They decided they wanted to win and we did.”

Sikes said the key to the victory was execution in the 15-7 final game.

Earlier this week, the Lady Trojans dropped two matches to area rivals Eufaula and Rehobeth Tuesday in a tri-match.

Rehobeth won to the tune of 2-1 (25-8, 18-25, 15-13) and Eufaula took down CHHS 2-0 (25-14, 25-7).

The Lady Trojans picked up their first win of the season Aug. 28 against Goshen. CHHS came away with the 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-11) victory.

The JV Lady Trojans pulled out their first victory over the Lady Cougars Thursday evening with a 2-1 (19-25, 25-18, 15-11).

“This was a combination of the freshman and JV team and we were just trying to get everyone an opportunity tonight,” Sikes said. “We were mixing and matching to find the best combination and we had a good fit today.”
