Goshen Lady Eagles’ head coach Dee Hughes had a pep talk with her team after a couple mental mistakes on the base paths cost GHS scoring opportunities and the team responded with 10 runs to defeat area foe Highland Home 10-2 at home Thursday evening.

&uot;We talked about some things and they responded by busting the game open,&uot; Hughes said. &uot;This was a real big win for us because we are now in a good position for the area tournament.&uot;

The Lady Flying Squadron drew two walks in the second inning and a triple brought both those runners home to give HHHS a 2-0 lead. But those were the only runs scored by Highland Home all game.

The Lady Eagles (5-4, 4-2 AHSAA Class 2A, Area 1) cracked the goose egg in the third inning, as Shelby Vinson opened the inning with a double. Kristen Dease drew a walk and scored on a double by Sidney Sullivan.

Dease drew two walks in the game, had three runs scored and had one RBI. Sullivan, a seventh grader, finished the game 2-for-2 with two doubles, a walk, one run scored and four RBIs.

&uot;Sidney Sullivan had two big hits for us tonight and she really stepped up and did a great job,&uot; Hughes said. &uot;We have been bringing our JV girls up to fill some positions for girls who are not hitting. And they are proving they can play at this level after finishing the JV season 17-3. If they continue to produce, we will let them play.&uot;

Goshen tied the game in the fourth inning when Nyokia Slater scored on a passed ball.

Goshen wasted no time to take the lead, adding two runs in the fifth inning for a 4-2 advantage.

Shelby Vinson reached on an error, Dease walked and Sullivan laced a double to score Dease and courtesy runner Camesha Whatley.

The sixth inning saw six Lady Eagles cross the plate. DeAnna McCleod, Racheal Senn, Hannah Linzey, Dease, LeAnna Vinson and Sullivan each scored in the inning to seal the victory for GHS.

Senn was 1-for-2 on the day with two runs scored. Shelby Vinson had a double and Amanda Griggs, McLeod, LeAnna Vinson and Brittany Ragland each scored one run.

Ragland notched the win for the Lady Eagles, pitching five innings and allowing two runs on two hits. She struck out six batters and walked four.
