Henry Lee Greer

Henry Lee Greer, age 90, of Tuscaloosa, formerly of Centreville and Troy, passed away on June 2, 2007, at Morning Pointe Assisted Living Residence. Services are to be held Wednesday, 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Troy with Pastor Allen McBride officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hills Memorial Park. Family will receive visitors Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dillard Funeral Home.

His parents, Daniel and Erskine Greer, preceded him in death. Henry is survived by his wife of 68 years, Virginia Satterfield Greer; and two sons David (Sally) of Savannah, Ga., and Tommy (Barbara) of Tuscaloosa; grandchildren Lance (Christy) Greer of Suwannee, Ga., Benjamin (Ruth) Greer of Birmingham, Misha Greer of Tuscaloosa, Rusty (Desirae) Greer of Savannah, Ga., and Brittany Greer of Tuscaloosa; great-grandchildren David Perez, Erin Greer, Jackson Greer, Megan Greer and James Greer. Brothers-in-law Glenn and Jack Satterfield reside in Lineville. There are also many much loved nieces and nephews.

Henry was born in Lamar County on July 26, 1916. He graduated from Gadsden High School and earned his B.S. degree from Jacksonville State College where he was captain of the football team and a soloist for the Glee Club for four years.

He served as teacher and coach in Millerville, principal and coach in Piedmont, and principal in Ider, Munford, Centreville, and Troy.

He ended his teaching career as superintendent of education in the Troy City School System.

Henry was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Troy, T.E.A., A.E.A., N.E.A., Alabama Association of School Administrators, Alabama Council of Administration, Board of Control, and Teacher Retirement System.

He served as president of the 3rd and 6th District Principals' Association, Alabama Association of Secondary School Principals, 7th District A.E.A., Lions Club, and Kiwanis Club. He ended his outstanding career in June of 1978.

He and Virginia spent many wonderful years together, enjoying their family, friends and each other.

He will always be remembered for his love of young people, and he often spoke with admiration for his &#8220former students.”

Henry considered it a real privilege to have had the opportunity to work with so many outstanding young people and educators.

William Davis, Richard Gilchrist Jr., Ben Greer, Lance Greer, Rusty Greer and David Ingram.

Honorary pallbearers will be Lowell Carter, Pete Farrar, Joe W. Gilchrist, Richard Gilchrist Sr., Herman Gunter, Leon Hilyer, Hank Jones, Dr. John Long, Charles Norris, Bill Porter, Floyd Porter, Frank Sadler, Ray Sullivan, Johnny Witherington and all former students and colleagues.

Ever M. Austin

Services for Ever M. Austin, 80, were at 2 p.m. Monday at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Henderson officiating.

Burial was in Carroll Street Cemetery under the direction of George F. Grubbs Funeral Home of Troy.

Mrs. Austin was a member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Austin and Ida M. Jones; husband, Oscar Williams, Sr.; son, Rhodell Williams; and aunt, Rochelle King.

Survivors include her children, Shirley (Michael, deceased) Woodfork of Newark, NJ, Octavia Mae (Larry, deceased) Hinton of Durham, NC, Oscar (Katherine) Williams, Jr. of Troy, and Catherine Davenport; grandchildren, Derrick and Kim Williams of Selma, Dizella (Kenny), Dallas, Texas, Jerry Luis and Antionette Williams, Snellville, Ga.,

Pamela (James) Hogan, Deann D. Kearson, Atlanta, Ga., Jackie (Shane) McKnight, Covington, Ga., Rodney Williams, Troy, Ida D. Williams, Layfette Williams, Michael T. Williams, Newark, NJ and Mario Williams, Philadelphia, Pa.; devoted friend, William Davis; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and other family and friends.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be friends of the family. Flower bearers will be granddaughters and friends of the family.
