William Andrew Meeks, 55, of Troy, died at Troy Regional Medical Center in Troy, Tuesday, October 4, 2005. Visitation will be held at Dillard Funeral Home in Troy on Saturday, October 8, 2005 from 2:30 PM until 3:30 PM. 8, 2005 at 3:30 PM with Reverend Wayne Locklar officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Moriah Cemetery. The family request that memorials be made to the Mt. Moriah Cemetery Fund. The pallbearers will be his cousins and the honorary pallbearers will be the Colley Senior Center Group. Survivors include, Children, Christopher A. (Jimmy) and Teresa Mills of Frostproof, Florida, Uncles, Joseph Meeks of Panama City, Florida, Travis (PeeWee) and Bertha Meeks of Troy. He was preceded in death by his mother, Addline H. Mills and brothers, Karol L. Meeks and David Gene Meeks.

Charles W. Oliver

Charles William Oliver, a great contributor to the musical life of the Tidewater area, died June 6, 2005, in Sentara Virginia Beach Hospital. Born Sept. 27, 1927, in Troy to Mr. and Mrs. O.L. Oliver, Sr., Chuck was a graduate of Birmingham Conservatory of Music.  He also attended Columbia University and studied voice with Mac Harrell at Juilliard School of Music.  He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and prior to moving permanently to Virginia Beach, was a member of the Robert Shaw Chorale and the American Savoyards.

Hired to play the role of Robert E. Lee in &#8221The Confederacy“, a local outdoor drama, Chuck came to Virginia Beach and liked it so well that he made it his home.  He served as general manager of the family hotel, Albemarle Hall, and also worked in the hotel business with the Covington and Koch families, all the while making his mark on the local music scene.

As the second director of the Virginia Beach Chorale (then the Virginia Beach Civic Chorus), he produced numerous musicals at the Virginia Beach Dome, among them &#8221The Merry Widow“ and &#8221Carousel.“  He was also a member of the Cantata Chorus, the Virginia Opera and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra.

Since his arrival in Virginia Beach in the 1950s, Chuck shared his musical talents with numerous churches in the area.  He served as choir director at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and at Galilee Episcopal Church.  He was also a singer on high holy days at Ohef Shalom Temple in Norfolk. A member of First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach, he served as bass soloist and section leader of the Chancel Choir there from 1981 to 2003.

Chuck is survived by his sister, Catherine Oliver Williams of Montgomery, and several nieces and nephews.  He also leaves the memory of his beautiful voice, his charming wit and his gracious personality in the hearts of his friends and fellow musicians.

A memorial service will be held for Chuck, Saturday, October 8, 2005 at 2:00 PM at Dillard Funeral Home Chapel in Troy.  Visitation will be held Saturday, October 8, 2005 from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM.

Pastelene McClure

Services for Pastelene McClure, 67, of Pike County, who died Oct. 3, 2005, at Troy Regional Medical Center, will be at 1 p.m. Oct. 8, 2005, at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Nathaniel Griffin officiating.

Mrs. McClure will lie in state from noon until 1 p.m. at the church.

Burial will be in McClure Town Church of God & Christ under the direction of Harrison Funeral Home of Troy.

Visitation was from 12:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Oct. 7, 2005, at the funeral home.

Mrs. McClure was born March 18, 1938 in Pike County. Her parents were James Edgar Jones, who is deceased, and Eva Lou McNeal. She graduated from Academy Street High School as a member of the Class of 1956. She was a member of the Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include a devoted husband for 48 years, Mr. Albert McClure; a loving mother, Eva Lou McNeal; three daughters, Diane (Rev. L.P.) Carter, Kimberley McClure, both of Troy, and Sandra L. Ikner of Stone Mountain, Ga.; one stepdaughter, Gloria Jean McClure of Troy; four sons, Willie Albert (Ramona) McClure, Randolph (Jeanette) McClure, Elder James (Linda) McClure, and Gregory McClure, all of Troy; one devoted sister, JoAnn Adams of Troy; two brothers, Mickey (Addie) Marina of Valdosta, Ga., and Kenneth (Jennie) McNeal of Cincinnati. Eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Special thanks and love to Veronica Walker (Ms. V.), her dialysis nurse who was like a daughter. And a special friend and dear friend, Mrs. Vernell Raines. And a host of sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers are sons and grandson Randolph McClure, James McClure, Greg McClure, Willie Albert McClure, Terrance McClure and Christopher Ikner, Jr. Honorary pallbearers are Adrick Holt, Mickey Marina, Kenneth McNeal and Jacob McClure. Floralbearers are friends of the family.
