Eavie Grant Ammons

Services for Eavie Grant Ammons, 84, who died at Noble Manor Friday, December 5, 2003, are 2 p.m. today at the Dillard Funeral Home Chapel in Troy with the Rev. Bo Weed officiating.

Burial will be in Green Hills Memorial Park under the direction of Dillard Funeral Home of Troy.

Visitation was 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 6 at Dillard Funeral Home in Troy.

She was preceded in death by her husband Leroy Ammons; parents A.F. and Mattie Lou Grant; great grandson Hunter Russell Starling; sisters Ivy Fuller and Jane Stephens; and brothers Parker Grant, Harper Grant and Conri Grant.

Mrs. Ammons is survived by daughters Mary (Sid) Starling of Troy and Lou Ellen (Carroll) Dunn of Troy; granddaughter Jennifer Dunn (Duncan) Lindsey of Dothan; grandsons Buddy (Sherry) Starling, David (Beth) Starling and Ben (Jennifer) Dunn, all of Troy; great grandchildren William, Joshua, Mary Margaret, Anna Marshall, and Andrew, all of Troy; brothers Lamar Grant of Glenwood and Gilmer Grant of Glenwood; sister Ann Maule of Vernon, Fla.

Pallbearers are her nephews. Honorary pallbearers are the staff and residents of Noble Manor.

Memorial contributions may be made to Southside Baptist Church Building Fund.

Alice Green Thornton

Graveside services for Alice Green Thornton, 100,

who died at home Thursday, December 4, 2003, will be at Fairview Cemetery, Shawnee, Okla. With Gaskill Funeral Home officiating. A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Troy will be announced at a later date.

Mrs. Thornton was an art educator. She received degrees from East Central College, Ada, Okla., Columbia University, New York, and worked toward a doctorate at Ohio State University. She retired from Troy State University in 1971 and immediately began demonstrating her spinning and weaving skills at the Pioneer Museum of Alabama. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Troy and a lifetime member of numerous professional organizations.

She was preceded in death by her husband Van Monroe Thornton Sr.; infant son Joseph Edward Thornton, so Rex Haralson Thornton; parents James T. Green and Zadie Morgan Green; a brother Nathan Green; and a sister, Lola Green.

She is survived by sons Van Monroe (Willa Dean) of Tulsa, Okla., Richard Miles (Michele) Thornton of Columbus, Ga., James Nash (Glenda) Thornton of Atlanta, Ga.; daughters Marjorie Thornton (Bruce) Smith of Oklahoma City, Okla. And Patricia Thornton (Thomas) Duke of Troy; daughter-in-law Jo Ann Thompson (Rex) Thornton of Grapevine, Texas; two brothers, Dr. John H. Green of Longview, Wash., and Robert Green of Paradise, Calif.; a sister, Phoebe Green Peters of Huntsville, Texas; sixteen grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
