Troy Mayor Jimmy Lunsford informed the Troy City Council Tuesday that a study would begin on extending sewer services along Barron Road.

"I intend to authorize Butch Watkins to do engineering design to determine the costs, then we'll look at a public hearing concerning extension of sewer in that area," he said.

The move comes following a request by Lovell Martin, asking for sewer services in Pine Ridge Estates.

Lunsford told council members that once the costs were determined, the property owners could know what their portion of the cost would be.

The measure required no council action.

Earlier in the meeting, council members recognized Troy State tennis coach Eric Hayes for his efforts during the recent United States Tennis Association tournament in Troy.

Lunsford presented Hayes a plaque in recognition of his coordinating the effort to host the tournament.

Lunsford also recognized Ken Cox for his contributions as a sponsor for the event.

"There's no way we could have done it without everyone's help, and we couldn't have gotten it done without the city's help," Hayes told the council.

While no official decision has been made, both Lunsford and Hayes were optimistic that Troy would again host a USTA tournament next year. Hayes said that decision would be made in January by association officials.

In other action, the council unanimously approved the annexation request by Andrew and Darcelle R. Wright.

"This is about a one-half acre piece of property on Enzor Road," council president Johnny Witherington told council members.

There was no public opposition to the annexation, and council members approved the move on a motion by District Three Councilman Jason Reeves, seconded by District Two Councilman Charles Meeks.

The council also approved a $14,984 bid by Ferrar for the fire department's requested purchase of new self-contained breathing apparatus. The new SCBAs will be used on the department's new equipment van that was purchased last month. Three other bids, ranging in price from $15,140 to $18,000 were received and opened prior to the council's meeting.

Council approved engineering and administrative services contracts in connection with a Community Development Block Grant that will partially fund water and sewer upgrades for the KW Plastics facility in the Troy Industrial Park.

Also on the agenda were Resolutions 642-648, which declare weeds on seven parcels in the city public nuisances. Action on those resolutions were delayed until Oct. 21, when council members will hold a final public hearing on the issue.

If the lots are have not been cleaned by that time, the city will take steps to enforce its weed ordinance and clean the lots through contract.

The costs associated with the clean up, including the costs of legal advertisements and administrative fees will be assessed to the property owners on their next property tax bill.
