Wednesday is the last day applications are being accepted for the Troy Public Library's Teen Board.

High school students can become involved in the board, which is all-volunteer and helps with library activities, said Teresa Colvin, the children's librarian.

This year, some 20 area high school students have been involved in the program.

The Teen Board has donated LeapFrog books and literacy packets, organized Books for Babies and sponsored book drives, and have helped with

summer reading programs.

"This is a great way for teenagers to get involved in helping others," Colvin said.

The Teen Board also helps to staff after-school tutoring programs.

Colvin said this year, that program is expanded, and with the help of Troy State University students, more tutoring is available for elementary and secondary students at the library.

"We've been doing it for elementary students, but it went over so well we're offering it for secondary students as well," Colvin said.

She said local schools have donated textbooks through sixth grade levels, and higher grades can bring their own books for help.

"There are a lot of things we're doing in collaboration with the university, and parents need to know they can get help here at the Troy Public Library," Colvin said.

She said tutoring is available on Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and on Tuesday and Thursday nights.
