Minors rained out

The Dixie Minors sub-district tournament in Troy was rained out Monday afternoon.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., Troy Parks and Recreation Officials deemed the playing surface at Sportsplex Field 8 too wet to be playable. Monday's games will be played today at their Monday schedules, and the tournament will be pushed back a day.

"The field was already wet, then it rained last night and it rained today, and the field was is no shape for games," said Troy Parks and Recreation Director Dan Smith.

Tropical Storm Bill spent most of Monday spewing thunderstorms and rain into the Southeast, and the future of the tournament looks bleak as well.

Forecasts have called for rain every day this week as the storm continues its path.

"If anyone has looked at the radar, it looks like a big Christmas tree," Smith said. "It's all green. We might have some trouble this week."

The district tournament is scheduled to begin Saturday in Dothan. All the sub-district locations were cancelled Monday, but they are all trying to figure out ways to end their tournaments before Saturday's district tournament.

Smith said there were several options available if a second day is lost to rain.

"We may have to play games on July 4, but we don't want to do that," Smith said. "We could also double up on a day, but we have to give every team at least five hours between games."

Another option is for the district tournament to be delayed for a week. The end of the district tournament is scheduled for a full week before the first game of the state tournament.

Since districts do not have rain-out emergency tie-breakers (i.e. coin flips, etc.) to determine a sub-district champion, they must all be decided on the field, it is necessary for all sub-districts to be completed before district tournament can begin. Therefore, the district tourney must be pushed back if sub-district tournaments are not completed.

If today's games are played, the schedule will be as follows. The Geneva All-Stars will face the Samson All-Stars in an elimination game at 4 p.m. Coffee County will face the Enterprise Americans at 6 p.m. in the second elimination game at 6 p.m. At 8 p.m., the undefeated Troy Americans will face the Enterprise Nationals in the winner's bracket game.
