Geneva took a while to get started in the Dixie Minor sub-district tournament.

Elba held a 1-0 lead until the fourth inning and a 2-1 lead heading into the fifth. But Geneva scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead, then followed that with a nine-run sixth to win the first game of the tournament 12-2.

&uot;It just took us a while to get started,&uot; Geneva coach Roberty Gautney said. &uot;This was a bunch of guys who hadn't really played together, so it took them a while.&uot;

The turning point of the sixth inning was Cody Shoemaker's two-run, bases-loaded double. Geneva held only a 4-2 lead at that point, but Shoemaker's blast to left field extended the lead to 6-2.

&uot;I just made good contact,&uot; Shoemaker said.

Quan Tolbert and Chase Carnley scored on the play.

The first five Geneva batters in the inning reached base. Chaz Carnley walked, Tolbert singled, and Chase Carnley hit an RBI single. Brad Horne walked to load the bases for Shoemaker.

After Shoemaker's double made the game 6-2, Mason McCormick hit a one-out, RBI single to score Horne. Dilion Gautney knocked in two with a single, and Preston Strickland drove in a run with a fielder's choice. Tanner Fredrick walked and Reid Tidwell finished the inning with a two-RBI double.

For most of the game, Elba held a 1-0 lead. Elba scored in the bottom of the second when Ashton Davis scored on a Jantzen Flowers RBI single.

Geneva did not score until the top of the fourth when Chaz Carnley led off with a walk. Shoemaker singled to score Carnley and tie the game.

Tyler Anderson put Elba back on top in the bottom of the inning. He was hit by a pitch and scored when Davis reached on an error.

McCormick led off with a double in the top of the fifth and reached third on a wild pitch. He scored when Dillion Gautney grounded out to the pitcher. Geneva took the lead for good when Tidwell singled to score Adams. Geneva led 3-2 at that point.
