Goshen Elementary fifth grade student Anna Marie Sims received a $50 savings bond from First National Bank in Brundidge and was named this week's WTBF/First National Bank A-B Honor Roll Student of the Week.

Sims didn't have much to say except that she was surprised to hear about her award.

&uot;How'd I win?&uot; she thought when she heard the news.

Her teacher Michelle Caffie was just as surprised.

&uot;I asked her if she entered anything that she hadn't told me about, but she said she didn't.

It was really a surprise to both of us,&uot; Caffie said.

Caffie's surprise quickly turned to pride for a girl she calls a model student.

&uot;She is helpful, respectful and well-liked by all of the students,&uot; Caffie said.

Sims won the honor after WTBF randomly drew her name from a list of Goshen Elementary students.

Each week, the radio station chooses a school within Pike County and randomly picks a student's name from a list of A-B honor roll students.

But the program has brought rewards to more than just the students.

Last year, the State Treasury Department gave them one of five awards for promoting savings bonds to young children.

&uot;We were in very good company,&uot; WTBF vice president Jim Roling said.

&uot;We were recognized next to companies such as Alabama Power and Lockheed Martin.

I was pleased with that.&uot;

The radio station began the WTBF/First National Bank A-B Honor Roll Student of the Week about seven years ago as a promotion.

The radio station takes pride in continuing the tradition.

Winners are announced on air mid-week of the week previous to their turn as student of the week.

Sims said she studies hard to be on the honor roll and is excited her work has paid off to the tune of a $50 savings bond.

She plans to use it to help pay for a 4-H camping trip to the Coosa River in May.
