Troy State point guard Kerri Fiehrer is not afraid of much.

However, one thing the Lady Trojans does not want to do is repeat her performance during Troy State's previous home game.

Although the Lady Trojans defeated Mercer 76-69 in overtime, Fiehrer did not have her best game. She shot three-for-11 from the field, including multiple air balls, and committed nine turnovers.

"I hope I play better this time," Fiehrer said. "My parents are going to be here and I don't seem to play as well when they are here as I do on the road."

Fiehrer will get three chances to improve on her home record as the Lady Trojans (7-7, 2-1) welcome the Stetson Lady Hatters (2-12, 1-2) to Trojan Arena today at 7 p.m.

Fiehrer played well in Troy State's road win over Central Florida Saturday. She scored 14 points and dished out six assists while only turning the ball over five times.

"Kerri is the best we have at getting the ball inside to the post," head coach Michael Murphy said. "She will pass the ball inside even when she knows it will take a perfect pass to avoid a turnover. She has a high turnover number, but some of that is because our post players don't always go after the ball as hard as they should. We have a tendency to let the ball come to us rather than to go get it."

Fiehrer leads the Atlantic Sun in assists with 80 and is fifth in the conference in assists-to-turnover ratio.

Her ability to get the ball inside will be key for the Lady Trojans to earn a conference win tonight. The Lady Hatters are league leaders in three-pointer defense, so Thea Herring, LaToya Gay and Kim McGriff will need to have solid performances.

"They extend their defense so far out they don't let you shoot," Murphy said.

Defensively, the Lady Trojans will have to be tenacious. Stetson likes to spread the court and force defensive problems.

The Hatters like the inside offense as well, relying on Joslyn Giles, a freshman forward, for most of their offense. Giles averages 11.8 points per game and has not hit a three-point shot all season.

"That puts pressure on your close-out defense," Murphy said. "You have to make sure to close out your assignments."

Fiehrer said the Lady Trojans are not taking Stetson lightly and are ready to play the Lady Hatters.

"We can't take them for granted," Fiehrer said. "Every conference game is important and we have to make sure we get this win. I want to beat Stetson and Jacksonville and have some momentum when Georgia State comes in. Then we can beat them."

Troy State leads Stetson by a game for third place in the Atlantic Sun South Division, but with a win the Lady Trojans would be in second by virtue of a tie-breaker with Central Florida.

Troy State will be at home Saturday against Jacksonville at 2 p.m. and again against Georgia State Jan. 30.
