Troy Post 70 wins districts in Ariton

The Troy Post 70 Junior Legion team will advance to state for the second consecutive year as they beat Skipperville 7-5 for the district tournament title on Saturday night in Ariton.

Skipperville scored three runs off three hits in the first off Troy starter Matt Johnson.

However, Johnson settled down to allow just one more hit throughout the next six innings, striking out four batters.

Skipperville would lead off the third inning by issuing four straight walks as Clint Pugh, Daniel Porter, Chase Kelly and Tyson Pugh all reached. Three would score for Troy with David Doty knocking in one run with a sacrifice fly.

Troy broke the tie with a run in the fourth, but Skipperville answered with two runs in the fifth to reclaim the lead.

Troy scored three runs to close out the game in the sixth as Blake Phelps hit a single and Kelly had a double.

The win came on the heels of a 20-3 pounding of Ozark on Friday night.

Troy started the first with eight straight runs, scoring 10 total in the inning while knocking seven hits.

Clint Pugh was 2-for-2 with a homerun and a double and Porter added a double, single and homerun. Doty and Jeremy Jones each knocked homeruns also for Troy.

Tyson Pugh hit a double and single. Chase Clower, Adam Wallace and Stephen Morelock each had hits in the game.
