Troy Belles whip up on Opp 23-8 in semifinal round

An nine-run flurry in the fifth inning propelled the Troy Dixie Belles into the championship game of the sub-district tournament.

Troy was up 14-2 on Opp but allowed the visitors to score six runs in their half of the fifth to make the game close.

However, the Rebels ended any hopes of a come back, scoring nine consecutive runs in the inning to end the game with Dixie Softball’s 15-run mercy rule.

Troy had pushed their lead to 12 runs with six runs in the fourth inning.

The Rebels opened the game with a seven-run blasting, which saw four Troy players walked and five contribute basehits.

Eden Harris had a triple RBI to open Troy’s scoring in the first then Tiffany Brooks drove in two runs with a single and Amanda Hayes singled in a runner as well.

Heather West and Whitney Johnson combined to hold Opp scoreless through the first three innings of play. West picked up the win, retiring six straight batters in the first and second.

Ashley Simmons ended the game in the fifth with her second hit of the inning,

a single RBI.

Hayes was 4-for-5 as Troy ended the game with 20 hits. Simmons was 3-for-5 and Harris was 2-for-3. Heather Snell was 3-for-4 and Eden Stamey was 2-for-2. Mandy Sullivan was 2-for-5.

Whitney Merritt, Johnson, Brooks and

Mary Katherine Green each had hits for Troy as well.

Opp had five hits in the game with Heather Dixon hitting a two-run double and Lacy Wade a triple RBI.
