Unlike Friday’s win over Greenville, Troy 14-year-old head coach Cot Wallace didn’t have to wait too long to watch one his players take a pitch downtown this time.

Only the Troy’s second batter out of the dugout on Monday night against Luverne, Brent Kohn swung on a fastball in the first inning of play and sent it skyward into left field for a solo homer.

Troy cushioned their lead with three more runs before Luverne cut it in half with a force RBI in the fifth, 4-2. That’s when the hits really started coming for Troy, as the host team added four runs each in the fifth and sixth innings of play to end the game.

Luverne returns tonight to take on Greenville in the sub-district loser’s bracket while Troy takes the night off and awaits the winner.

Marquez Toney picked up the win, pitching four and one-third innings before giving way to Kohn in the fifth. It was Toney’s fourth inning home run against Greenville on Friday which allowed Troy to leave with the 1-0 win.

On Monday, Toney struck out six batters, allowed three hits and gave up one earned run.

"We hit the ball a whole lot better tonight then we did against Greenville and I was glad to see that," said Wallace. "But again, it was our pitching that really looked good tonight."

Kohn closed the game allowing only one more runner to cross the plate for Luverne.

Along with his homer, Kohn added a triple. Devin Miller, Toney, Cooper Nichols, Chris Davis and Jim Wallace each had singles in the game. Drew Walker added a double also as Troy totalled nine hits for the night.

Shawn Nelson had an RBI for Luverne.

Greenville 7

Troy found it tough going against Greenville starter Lynn Lewis, falling 7-1 on Monday night at the Sportsplex.

Troy returns to face Luverne tonight in the loser’s bracket.

Lewis struck out six batters and also added a sacrifice RBI in the game. Caleb Blackburn came in as relief to seal the deal for Greenville in the seventh, striking out two more Troy batters in the inning.

Chase Avant, Tanner Hensley and Daniel Farrar each had singles for Troy. Blake Sanders scored Troy’s lone run in the seventh.

Rico Johnson and Josh Wasden each had RBIs also for Greenville, Wasden’s coming on a double.

Troy plays Luverne tonight at 7 p.m. on Field 5 at the Sportsplex.

Luverne 10 (13-year-old)

Elba 9

In the game prior, Luverne eliminated Elba 10-9 in the bottom of the seventh as Austin Brooks drove in the winning run with two outs already on the board.

Brooks’ single RBI ended the game and assured Luverne new life against Troy tonight.

Clayton Sanders had a two RBI double and Jonathan Helms had single with on run scoring. Tevy McClain had single and Jacob Sexton added a single and a double. Caleub Mount added a double, while Kyle Sexton added two singles for Luverne.

Brad Sullivant drove in three runs with a double for Elba and Stephen Driggers added a single and double.

Chad Heartsill and Adam Johnson combined to pick up the win for Luverne.

Greenville 11 (14-year-old)

Elba 2

Adam Moore, David Stephenson and Ben Coker all combined on the mound to pick up the win for Greenville, knocking Elba out of the sub-district tournament with an 11-2 victory on Monday night.

Brady Newton and David Moore each had doubles and Adam Moore hit two doubles to lead Greenville. John Golson had a basehit. Justin Hester hit two singles and double and Stephenson added two singles as Greenville advances to play Luverne tonight.

For Elba, Chase Boutwell, Dale Stinson and Justin West had singles. Abel Childs added two hits also for Elba.
