Pike County residents can reap the harvest of summer while support local farmers beginning this Saturday.

The Pioneer Farmers Market opens at 7 a.m. at the Pioneer Museum of Alabama, and it guarantees the freshest of Pike County’s harvest will be available to locals.

The market, which will operate under the auspices of the State of Alabama Farmers Market Authority, provides the vehicle for local farmers to sell their goods. The museum offers the location; the authority provides the vehicle for participation a voucher program for senior citizens; and the residents here will provide the willing customers.

Under state guidelines, only produce grown by the vendor can be sold at the farmer’s market. That means the squash and potatoes, tomatoes and peas available for sale will be grown by farmers in Pike and surrounding counties. And that means by simply stopping by to purchase produce directly from the growers, we can have a direct impact on the farm economy in Pike County.

Being able to purchase farm-fresh fruits and vegetables is reason enough for a farmer’s market. But knowing that we’re able to support our friends and neighbors who farm is an even greater benefit.

We encourage everyone to take advantage of the farmer’s market, Saturday and throughout the summer season.
