Troy State head baseball coach John Mayotte will not have his contract renewed when it expires on July 31, Athletics Director Johnny Williams announced on Tuesday, making the 2002 season Mayotte’s last with the Trojans.

The 12-year coach compiled a 386-273-1 record in his Troy State career, including a 28-30 mark this season. The Trojans finished 28-28 in the regular season, and were 16-14 in Atlantic Sun Conference play, but ended the year with two losses at the conference tournament last week.

The Trojans have finished below .500 in each of the last three seasons.

"We appreciate the job that Coach Mayotte has done over the last 12 years," Williams said. "We just feel like it is time to go in a new direction with our baseball program."

Mayotte took over at Troy State for legendary head coach Chase Riddle in 1991 and guided the Trojans to the Division II World Series two years later. That year, he was named Division II National Coach of the Year.

Following the program’s move to Division I in 1994, the Trojans continued their winning ways, advancing to a pair of NCAA Regional tournaments in 1995 and 1997. The team also won a share of five conference titles, the last in 1998 when the Trojans captured the A-Sun Western Division crown. Under Mayotte, 44 Trojans earned all-conference honors, including 27 first-team selections. Seven players earned their respective league’s "Player of the Year" award.

In his career, Mayotte boasts an 821-476-1 record in 25 seasons, the first 13 of which were spent at Eckerd College in Tampa, Fla.

Williams said a nationwide search for a replacement would begin immediately, but he placed no timetable on naming the team’s new coach.
