A former Alabama resident is scheduled to be arraigned in a Portland, Maine court today for the murder of a Portland woman who disappeared Oct. 21 of last year.

Jeffery "Russ" Gorman was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday morning in Cumberland County Superior Court in Portland after being indicted by a grand jury last week in the killing of Amy St. Laurent.

St. Laurent’s body was found in December, buried off of a county road near Scarborough, Maine just one-half mile from the residence where Gorman had been living with his mother. Police have not said how St. Laurnet was killed.

Gorman was arrested in Troy four days after St. Laurent’s body was discovered, on a probation violation. His arrest followed an armed standoff with police. Gorman grew up in Alabama, but has lived in Maine since high school. He was listed as the prime suspect in the St. Laurent Case, because police say he was the last person known to have seen her the night she disappeared.

According to information released by Troy Police Chief Anthony Everage, Gorman was arrested after Maine authorities advised the Troy Police Department he could be in the Troy area. After his arrest, Gorman agreed to return to Maine. Authorities from Portland came to Troy and extradited him back to Maine on Dec. 13.

Last month, Gorman was sentenced to 90 days in the county jail for his probation violation. He continues to be held in a maximum-security cell there.
