The Troy State softball team opened the brand new Lady Trojan Softball Complex by splitting its doubleheader with UAB on Saturday afternoon.

"This was a good split for us," said Troy State head coach Melanie Davis. "We couldn’t get the little things done in the first game, but were able to improve in the second game. We have a lot to improve on as this season goes along."

The Blazers (1-1) took game one 1-0. Amanda Ellis’ RBI single in the second inning drove home Kai Paul to put the Blazers on top.

Megan Stephenson made that one run stand up for UAB, allowing just two hits over seven innings to record the shutout.

Kim Unkenholz took the loss for Troy State, allowing just one run on four hits, while striking out six.

The Lady Trojans (1-1) took game two, 1-0. Peggy Swift’s ground ball was misplayed by UAB’s Paul, allowing pinch runner Katrina Jackson to score from second and put TSU on the board.

Cassie Wilkenson would do the rest, picking up the win. She allowed just four hits over seven innings while striking out three and walking just one.

Freshman Bonnie Belin was impressive in her debut, going 2-for-2. Erica Cruzat came off the bench as well in the second game, going 1-for-2.

Kerri Foster took the loss for UAB, allowing one run on five hits.

The Lady Trojans are back in action again on Tuesday as they travel to face Florida A&M. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. in Tallahassee, Fla.
