TSU women outlast Samford, 62-57, for home win

Sophomore point guard Kerri Fiehrer scored a career-high 17 points and dished out eight assists to lead the Lady Trojans over Samford, 62-57, Saturday, in an Atlantic Sun Conference matchup.

Troy State started the game off hot scoring the first 11 points of the contest which included two three-point baskets by Fiehrer. Samford then used a 28-15 run, keyed by guard Jennifer East’s 14 first-half points, to take the lead at the half 28-26.

In the second half, the two teams went back and forth, with the lead changing three times. A three-pointer by Troy State freshman Laurie Tinsley with 13:33 to play got the Lady Trojans going as they pushed their lead to eight points.

With 25 seconds to play, two free-throws by Samford’s Giovanni Price cut Troy State’s lead to one. Two free-throws a piece by Chaquita Alexander and Fiehrer covering the last 20 seconds produced the deciding points for the Lady Trojans.

Troy State ended the game with four players scoring in double-figures for just the second time this season.

The Lady Trojans will end their two-game homestand Monday when they host rival Jacksonville State at Trojan Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
