Senior Center offers more than meals

During the Tuesday meeting of the Troy City Council, the new director of the Troy Nutrition Center, Hassie Green, addressed the council concerning programs and activities at the center.

During her presentation to the council, she said that serving food is not all that the nutrition center does.

So true. The Troy Nutrition Center is well known as a place for senior citizens to gather and socialize with each other. Many of these people are now alone in the later years of their lives and need the company of others their own age to fill the gaps left by the loss of spouses, friends and loved ones over the years.

The center offers games, singing programs and much needed health check-ups. Many of those who take advantage of the latter would not get the needed health screenings if not for the services offered at the center.

And then there’s the parties.

Holidays are made special for those who frequent the center, perhaps more special than they would have without it. Many times the Colley Senior Center, located upstairs, and the nutrition center join forces to put on such events. What a blessing for seniors this has been over the last several years.

In the golden years of their lives, seniors need stimulation to remain active. Remaining active is a key ingredient in remaining healthy and living longer. Thanks to those at the nutrition center and the Colley Senior Center, many seniors will live longer and happier lives.
