Carroll’s Brandon Newman was lying on his back near midcourt with 47 seconds left in Tuesday night’s game between his Eagles and the Charles Henderson Trojans.
CHHS’s LaKory Daniels offered his hand to Newman, but the latter refused to accept it.
Newman’s frustrations were understandable, somewhat, since it was Daniels who had just scorched the Eagles for 36 points in the Trojans 70-46 area victory. The win improved the Trojans to 10-5 on the year and 2-0 in Class 5A Area 2, with road game remaining against Carroll and Eufaula.
It was also Daniels who took control in the second quarter when it appeared CHHS would let an early lead slip away. Thanks to an 11-0 run in the opening period, CHHS was 17-10. Newman cut that lead to five with a basket to open the second period.
Daniels took charge from there.
The junior dropped in 13 straight points, including three baskets from behind the arc as the Trojans built a 20 point lead at the half, 43-23. Senior forward Qua Davis also came alive during the quarter adding seven straight points to follow Daniels. Davis finished with 18 points in the game.
Davis and Daniels combined for three consecutive baskets to start the third for CHHS as the Trojans outscored the Eagles, 14-12.
The lone bright spot in the game for Carroll was Newman, who finished with 19 points in a losing effort.
CHHS next plays at home against Barbour County on Jan. 15.
The CHHS B-team improved to 8-1 on the year with a 41-21 victory over Carroll in the early game on Tuesday night. Joey Moultry led the way with 13 points.
