Ethel Sanders, 80, of Troy died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000 at Pike Manor Health Care Facility.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 8, 2000 at Dillard Funeral Home Chapel in Troy with Dr. Ed Walter officiating. A private family graveside service will follow with Dillard Funeral Home in Troy directing.

Miss Sanders was born in Troy on Sept. 14, 1921 to Pike County native Joel Sanders and Annie McAlpin, a native of Brazil. The two met while Mr. Sanders was serving as a teacher in South America. Ethel Sanders remained close to her relatives in South America, making several trips to visit, as well as having them visit her home in Alabama.

She helped establish both the Montgomery County Library and the Book Mobile services in Montgomery. She served as director of the Montgomery County Library from 1944 until1956 and for libraries in Madison, Jackson, Shelby and Talladega counties for short periods prior to joining the staff at Troy State University. In 1973, while at Troy State, she was included in the new edition of the Marquis "Who’s Who of American Women."

She was a member of the American, Southeastern and Alabama Library Associations, the National Education Association, Alabama Education Association and Alabama Instructional Media Association. She was also an active member of the Troy Geographic Study Club, the American Association of University Women and the Business and Professional Women’s Club in Troy.

Survivors include one nephew and his wife, Kleob and Pat Loflin of Montgomery; great-nieces Rachel and Rebecca Loflin of Montgomery; great-nephew and his wife, Nick and Kerry Loflin of Troy and special friend, Lois Green of Troy.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or a favorite charity.

Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Sept. 8 at Dillard Funeral Home.

Jeanette Scoggins

Jeanette Scoggins, 56, of Needmore died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000 at University of Alabama-Birmingham Medical Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000 at Murphy’s Chapel with the Rev. Turpin Ashurst officiating. Burial will be at Murphy’s Chapel Cemetery in Troy with Dillard Funeral Home of Troy directing.

Survivors include her husband, Johnny Scoggins of Needmore; son and daughter-in-law, Lance and Christy Saunders of Birmingham; grandchildren, Eliot Saunders and Ginnie Saunders; one sister, Mary Helms of Needmore; two brothers, John T. Coston of Needmore and James A. Coston of Montgomery.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Sept. 8 at Dillard Funeral Home in Troy.

Memorial contributions may be made to Murphy’s Chapel Cemetery Fund.
