On Thursday night during Troy State’s pre-season scrimmage, Demontray Carter hauled in his first kickoff return as a Trojan at the 15-yard line.

The junior running back hesitated for a second, waiting for everything to fall into place and fell behind the Trojans’ other deep man, wide receiver Johnathan Carter.

That second was all it took for Demontray Carter to shred the entire Trojans’ special teams down the far sideline for an 85-yard touchdown.

On Thursday evening, Carter certainly showed flashes of the speed

which made him a Parade All-American out of Pensacola High School in Florida. Of course as everyone knows, Carter went to Auburn, got in trouble with his grades and transferred to Troy State.

Carter’s arrival at Troy State adds an incredible amount of excitement to the Trojans’ backfield. Sophomore LeBarron Black played behind departed senior Phillip Jones last season and came out of spring drills as the starter.

But TSU head coach Larry Blakeney won’t speculate on who will be the starter come the opening game against Alabama A&M on Sept. 2. He just knows that the Trojans’ running game looks as good as it was last season and has the possibility of being even better.

"Demontray’s shown us he can make people miss and he runs good routes out of the backfield,"Blakeney said. "With the tailback’s we have this year there are a number of ways we can attack a defense, from lining both Demontray and Lebarron in a split-back formation to sending one in motion at wide receiver. Demontray’s certainly added another dimension to our offense with his abilities."
