Gladys Shell Matthews

Gladys Shell Matthews, 95, of Troy, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Edge Regional Medical Center in Troy.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at Goodhope Baptist Church with the Revs. Clifford Matthews, Paul Matthews, and Ray Foreman officiating. The body will lie-in-state one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Goodhope Baptist Church Cemetery with Dillard Funeral Home of Troy directing.

Survivors include three daughters, Ernestine (James Edward) Chadwick of Montgomery, Jane (Dr. Earl M.) Jeffres of Fayetteville, Tenn., and Patsy (William O.) Powell of Troy; one son, Rev. Clifford (Peggy Galloway) Matthews of Tarentum; two sisters, Maymie Chambliss of Brushey Creek and Eunice (Willie) Perdue of Greenville; 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Sara Frances Shell of Montgomery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. I.N. Matthews; her parents, Ernest Clifford and Ada Elizabeth Shell; one daughter and son-in-law, Myriam M. and Rev. Henry H. Cumbie; sister, Fairy Lancaster; brother-in-law, Pratt Lancaster; two brothers, Cecil Shell, Ralph Shell and brother-in-law, Morris Chambliss.

She was born in Butler County where she taught school before marrying and moving to Pike County. She was a longtime member of Northside Baptist Church in Pike County. She served with her husband as he pastored Harmony, Henderson and Goodhope Baptist Churches, and was very active in supporting and leading the Women’s Missionary Union.

Pallbearers for the service will be: James O. Johnson, Lex Floyd, Jimmy Messick, Gardner Dunn, Steve Stephens, and Jack King. Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of Goodhope Baptist Church.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 13, 2000, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Dillard Funeral Home in Troy.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Northside Baptist Church Building Fund.

Eliza Williams, 91, of Brundidge, died Friday, June 9, 2000.

Funeral services will held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at Tennille Road Crossroad Church of Christ with Bro. I.D. Simmons officiating. Burial will follow in the church yard cemetery with Bell’s Liptrot/Dawson Funeral Home directing.
