It’s still a month away, but plans for the Fourth of July are well underway.

Fireworks and family fun are synonymous with the Fourth of July and this year Troy’s celebration is expected to be just that.

For the second year, the city is hosting an old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration

Celebration committee chairman Dan Smith said last year’s event "far exceeded my expectations in terms of community involvement" and he expects this year to be even bigger and better.

"I’m very enthusiastic about it," Smith said.

Like every Fourth of July celebration, the fireworks are the highlight and Smith said this year the "fireworks show will exceed what we’ve ever done before."

Some of the old favorites like horseshoes, potato sack races and tug-of-war will be back as a reminder of the good ol’ days.

Smith said Troy’s one-day water theme park was a "huge success last year" and will be back again this year along with other games for children.

The event planning committee is also looking into having a barbecue cook-off as a contest for adults.

Although he wouldn’t say who, Smith said citizens should expect "several famous guests" to entertain on the Fourth of July.

All the fun and festivities will start at 4 p.m. and last until the end of the colorful fireworks display.

At this time, plans are for the July 4 activities to be at the Sportsplex. In the event of a traffic jam, a shuttle service will be provided to bus citizens from the Goody’s parking lot to the Sportsplex.

"Last year’s event was tremendous," Smith said he expects this one to be even better.

"This is an event people on the committee enjoy sinking their teeth into."

He hopes residents will come out and enjoy the holiday with family and friends.
