Never let it be said that there’s nothing to do in Pike County.

This weekend is packed so full of activities and entertainment that this rural South Alabama county could rival the glitz and glitter of the big cities of the South.

It will be a weekend of a community taking the fight to cancer, of

NFL stars on parade and will end in Perfect Harmony when a trio of the county’s own stars take the stage at the Crosby Theater.

The weekend will get an early start when Relay for Life kicks off with the Survivors’ Breakfast at 8 a.m. at Park Memorial United Methodist Church.

Teams will gather at the Troy State University band/soccer practice field at 2 p.m. setting up tents and firing up the grills. The Relay opening ceremony will begin at 6 p.m followed by the Survivors’ Walk.

The night’s Relay activities will include entertainment by the local dance studios, a line dance group, vocalists and a womanless beauty pageant. The luminary service will begin at 9 p.m. and the awards and closing ceremonies will begin at midnight.

Also in town on Friday night will be the NFL players who are participating in Fred Baxter’s All Star Charity Weekend. Baxter, a Brundidge native and member of the New York Jets,

and several of the

NFL players will make a short appearance at Relay and then host a celebrity auction at Trojan Arena. There is a $5 admission charge to the auction.

On Saturday the All-Star weekend will continue with a celebrity picnic from noon until 4 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium in Brundidge. There is a $5 charge for admission to the picnic. A celebrity basketball game against basketball stars from the local high schools will tip off at 7 p.m. in Trojan Arena followed by an All-Star party at the Holiday Inn of Troy. Tickets to the game and party are $10 each. No one under the age of 21 will be admitted to the party.

The proceeds from the Celebrity Weekend will go toward the renovation of the Doghouse training facility at Pike County High School and a portion will also be donated to Relay for Life.

Also on Saturday night, just down from Trojan Arena, the stars will also be out. Shelia Jackson, Christine Barron and Kathy Ryles will perform as Perfect Harmony in what will be their first solo concert.

The trio has dawn rave reviews for their performances all around the area, but, until Saturday night, they have performed along with other entertainers. Saturday night they will share the stage with no one and it will be a night they will long remember and so will the audience.

Perfect Harmony will sing a variety of songs, some as a trio and some as solos. They will sing gospel, pop and classical and they will end their performance with their signature song, "That’s What Friends Are For."

Tickets for Perfect Harmony are $10 for adults and $5 for students, but you would expect to pay a lot more for a performance like this anywhere else.

And, Pike County is not the only place to be this weekend because just across the line in Crenshaw County, the little hamlet of Glenwood is hosting its annual Festival at the Well Saturday. The festival will feature arts and crafts, good food and good entertainment. The festival gets underway at 9 a.m. and will wind down with a

street dance from 8 p.m. until midnight featuring the popular country music band, Patsalagi.

So, if you decided to sit home twiddling your thumbs this weekend, you’ve missed a good time somewhere along the way.
