Lamon Merritt, Sr., 79, of Route 7 Box 113 A in Troy died April 13, 2000 at Edge Regional Medical Center.

His funeral will be at 1 p.m., Thursday, April 20 at Springfield Missionary Baptist Church of Ansley. with the Rev. Donny Harris presiding. Burial will follow at Springfield Missionary Baptist Church of Ansley. Harrison Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Survivors include sons, Lamon Merritt, Jr. of Troy, James L. "Bubba" Merritt of Troy, Willie Roy Merritt of Goshen; daughters, Shirley Merritt Phillips of Loraine, Ohio, Doris Merritt Mahone of Goshen, Debra (Ronald) Merritt Johnson of Goshen, Velma Jean (Willie) Merritt Cargill of Montgomery, Catherine (Clerance) Merritt Sams of Troy; daughters-in-law, Gennie Ousley Merritt, Dorathy Bean Merritt of Troy; brothers, James D. Merritt of Luverne, Bishop Merritt of Cleveland, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Ruth Merritt of Birmingham, Annie Kate Lovejoy of Elvria, Ohio, Florence Lee Lovejoy of Elyria, Ohio; grandchildren, Lawrence Hill, Timothy Hill, Brenda Hill, Belinda Hill, Stephanie Hill, Rodney Merritt, Christy Merritt, Randall Merritt, Jalesha L. Pallbearers will be Alpine Lodge.

Honorary pallbearers will be Harvey Ellis, Dr. Michael Gordon, Jimmy Law, Alex Whaley, Jane Whaley, and Preston Franklin.

He was born on Oct. 12, 1920 in Pike County to Ira D. and Cora Fleming Merritt. He attended the Pike County School System. He was a retired farmer. He attended Springfield Missionary Baptist Church of Ansley. He enjoyed fishing, raising hogs and watching sports.

Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m., Thursday, April 20 at Springfield Baptist Church.

John W. "Jack" Smith

John W. "Jack" Smith, 83, of East Watts Street in Enterprise died Tuesday, April 18, 2000 at the Medical Center Enterprise after an extended illness.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m., Friday, April 21 at the First Baptist Church in Enterprise with Dr. Frank Wells and Rev. Tim Floyd presiding. Burial will follow at Meadowlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Patterson-Sorrells Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Survivors include daughters, Sandy Smith of Enterprise, Pat Smith of Troy; Godchild, Ashley Watkins of Sylacauga; nephews, Ben and Mike Smith of Banks; Randall Smith of Troy; special friends, Don and Kathy Pullum of Enterprise.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Pat Smith Sunday School Class and the members of the Retired DOT, 7th division.

He was preceded in death by wife, Louise (Lou) Smith in 1995. He was a native of Pike County and had lived in Enterprise for the past 43 years. He was a retired engineer from the State of Alabama, Department of Transportation. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Enterprise and was also a charter member of the Enterprise Kiwanis Club.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, April 20 at Patterson-Sorrells Funeral Home. The body will also be in the church 1 hour prior to service.
