Cardinals edge the Mets 1-0

It was the pitching duel many were waiting to see Tuesday night in the Dixie Boys matchup between the Ward’s Yamaha – Honda Cardinals and the Regions Bank Mets – and it stood up to most expectations.

Cardinals’ Ace pitcher Pete VanHorn won the battle as he pitched a seven-inning shutout accounting for 18 of the 21 Mets outs through strikeouts and leading his team to a slim 1-0 win.

Mets’ Ace Blake Phelps was just as deadly on the opposite side striking out 14 batters and holding the Cards scoreless through five until Daniel Hussey got the sole Cardinal hit in the sixth and was able to steal home for the game’s only run.

Phelps also had the the Mets’ only hit stealing VanHorn’s no-hitter away from him in the seventh inning.

Jammers 17, Wildfires 13

The Beard Oil Jammers won a true shootout over the AirTec Construction Wildfires in Ponytail league softball action Tuesday.

The Jammers got two home runs, including a grand slam out of Kimberly Collins pushing them to three five-run innings and a 17-13 win over the Wildfires.

Collins also had a double while teammate Eden Stamey had two triples and a single. Whitney Johnson had a double and a single, Jordan Barnette had two singles, April Headley had a triple and Amy Cole and Katie Boswell had singles.

The Wildfires were led by Denise C. and Deanna. Bayley Samples and Danielle Ettefaugh had singles.

ANGELS

Bay Bears 12, Lugnuts 7

The TSU Dinning Services Bay Bears remained undefeated in the Angels’ Softball League with a 12-7 win over The Messenger Lugnuts.

Jill Jennings and Marley Hughes combined on the mound for the Bay Bears to notch 10 strikeouts while Rebecca McKenzie had a home run and a single to lead them at the plate.

Jennings and RaeAnna Boswell both had two singles for the Bay Bears while Julie Money had a double and Hughes, Marlie Wlikes and Ebony Grimes all had a single.

The Lugnuts were led by Courtney Kelly with two doubles and a single while Kinsey Reynolds, Allison Jacobs, Keyani Foster, Alandria McBride and Chelsea Kelly all had singles.

Bay Bears 12, Aquasox 3

Jennings, Hughes and Boswell all combined on the mound for the Bay Bears for a 12-3 win over the Powell Printing Aquasox.

Money had a double, Jennings Boswell, Jessica Pearlstein and Chris Messick all had hits for the Bay Bears.

The Aquasox got hits out of Jasmine Seymore and Casey Adams.
