17-4 win over Calhoun

With several starters of the Goshen baseball team suspended for yesterday’s game against Calhoun, Eagles head coach Chad Dube said that his teams word for the day was "adversity."

So adverse, that Dube was forced to call up several junior varsity players for help.

"Basically our whole infield was either a seventh or eighth grader," he said. "But the kids played hard and they did the little things right. They played great."

The Eagles JV players, along with third baseman Brandon Hooks and pitcher Brandon Nicholson, did a solid job infield in helping Goshen to the 17-4 victory.

With the win, GHS secures the Class 3A Area 4 runner-up spot, behind St. James, in the AHSAA State playoffs.

"A lot of people counted us out when they heard about our personnel shortages for this game," Dube said. "But the kids came out today and had a good time and played hard and that’s what it takes to win."

Goshen scored six runs in the first inning, three in the third, and eight runs in the fourth. The Eagles locked and loaded at the plate dropping balls into the out field in front of, and behind, the Calhoun defense.

Clarence Bean and Cornelius Mahone both went 2-for-3, each knocking in three RBI’s. Averick Rogers hit three doubles in his four trips to the plate with two RBI’s and Brandon Nicholson and seventh grader Brandon Walters also went 3-for-4, to drive in three runs apiece. Mylo Jones was perfect in his three at-bats, sending home two runs for the Eagles.

Now the Eagles will finish off the season with a road game against Samson today at 6:30 p.m. and a home closer to end the regular season with Ariton on April 24 with a 4 p.m. start.
