Lady Trojan win over Northview

Sometimes you get in the zone and it peaks at just the right time.

Jenean Deveridge got in that zone for the Charles Henderson girls’ varsity team Tuesday and it paid off huge dividends in a 58-55 win that improved the Lady Trojans to 6-7 on the year.

Deveridge capped off a phenomenal night hitting a 3-pointer with only 40 seconds left to put the Lady Trojans up by one at the 56-55 mark. The bucket proved to be the nail in Northview’s coffin, but Deveridge hit two free throws to further her night and finish with a huge 30 points to lead the pack.

The CHHS junior hit six 3-pointers on the night and teamed up with Clarissa Parker’s 18 points to put up 48 of the Lady Trojans 58 total points.

Kanika Blackmon had 26 points to pace the Lady Cougars in the loss.

The Charles Henderson girls have won the right to host their Area Tournament and will receive a bye in the first round. The Lady Trojans tied with Stanhope 3-1 in Area play after falling to them in Stanhope a week ago, but CHHS has notched more wins over teams with a Class 5A rating or above and seals up the regular season championship.

In the boys game the Trojans led the Cougars early and led them in the second half as well, but finally fell in a 52-47 showing that dropped them to 7-11 on the year.

"We had them on the ropes," CHHS head coach Carl Hollis said. "We got on them early, but we just let them hang around until they beat us. I just felt like we gave out towards the end."

Marcus Williams led the way for Charles Henderson with a game-high 23 points on the night. Brandon Brown hit for 18 for Northview.

The Trojans will have to travel as they will not host the Area tournament for the first time in four years. Stanhope ended the season tied with CHHS at 3-1 in the Area and will host as they finished with one more win in Class 5A than the Trojans

Next up for both Charles Henderson teams is a trip to rival Carver on Friday. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
