Lady Trojans downed by FAU

BOCA RATON, Fla. –

Led by four starters in double-figures, Florida Atlantic jumped out early and ended Troy State’s three-game winning streak, 91-62, in Trans America Athletic Conference play.

"We didn’t take good care of the basketball," said Troy State head coach Jerry Hester, whose team falls to 6-7 overall, 3-3 in TAAC play.

"They jumped out on us, and we just couldn’t get our feet under ourselves."

The Lady Trojans offense stalled, shooting just 31.8 percent for the game (21-of-66).

Troy State struggled from behind the arc, going 3-of-16.

Florida Atlantic forced 37 turnovers, which they turned into 28 points.

The Lady Owls also were able to fastbreak, scoring 18 points in transition.

Florida Atlantic jumped out early, opening the game on a 22-4 run.

Latorria Matthews scored six of her game high 19 during that run.

The Lady Owls kept the pressure on Troy State throughout the game, not allowing them to get back into the game.

The Lady Trojans got as close as 20 twice, but couldn’t break that barrier, and were down 48-27 at the half.

The second half began back and forth, with Troy State cutting the lead to 52-30 with 16 minutes left in the game.

But the Lady Owls went on 12-0 run late in the second half, allowing them to cruise the rest of the way in with a 91-62 win.

Troy State was led by Lauren Peckham’s first double-double of the year.

Peckham scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Jennifer McInnis and Latoya Gay both scored 11 points.

Matthews led the Lady Owls with 19 points. Ruta Griniute scored 17, Chantale Jones was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor, scoring 16 points, while handing out seven assists. Tamala Vaughn scored 13, with Julie Goad dishing out six assists.

The Lady Trojans are back in action at home this Thursday in a non-conference game against Texas A&M-Corpus Chrisiti.

Tipoff is set for 5:15 p.m.
