BRUNDIDGE – The City of Brundidge got some unexpected news Monday and exactly what it means, none of the city officials know.

In the terms of a revised agreement between Allied Waste Industries, Inc. And Waste Management, Inc., Waste Management agreed Monday to sell its Brundidge landfill facility, along with 19 other collection operations, to Allied Waste, paving the way for optimism among city officials.

The Brundidge landfill was never opened by Waste Management after the site was purchased from Waste Away several years ago. The city had expected for the landfill to be a revenue producing facility for the city and also a local, cost saving disposal site for its solid waste.

Waste Management had indicated that the company had no immediate or future plans to open the landfill, said Britt Thomas, city manager.

"The news today that Waste Management agreed to sell the landfill hopefully is good news for Brundidge," Thomas said. "Even though we don’t know exactly what it means, we have to think Allied Waste Industries did not buy the landfill to keep it closed. We hope this is good for Brundidge."

Allied Waste Industries, Inc. and Waste Management, Inc. announced the signing of definitive agreements involving the purchase and sale of certain Canadian and United States solid waste services assets in separate transactions. These agreements replaced the previously announced transaction under which Allied Waste planned to sell to Waste Management all of the Canadian solid waste services assets of Browning-Ferris Industries Limited.

Under the terms of the revised agreements, Allied Waste has agreed to sell to Waste Management all of the shares of BFIL which owns the solid waste operations of Browning Ferris in Canada, including collection operations, transfer stations, landfill operations and recycling facilities.

Also under the terms of the revised agreements, Waste Management has agreed to sell to Allied Waste certain United States solid waste services assets with combined reported historical revenue of abut $132 million, including 9 landfill operations, 19 collection operations, 5 transfer stations and a landfill operating contract. These assets include three Alabama locations, Brundidge, Greenville and Chilton.

The purchase and sale transactions are subject to approvals from various state, provincial, municipal and federal agencies as well as other normal and customary closing conditions.
