Pike Pioneer Museum is gearing up for what should be one of the biggest events ever at the museum.

Pioneer Day, Saturday, Nov. 13, will feature Scheer’s Lumberjack Show along with a log-load of other entertainment and activities.

Scheer’s Lumberjack Show has been captivating audiences for the past 15 years. The show provides images of man against the impossible along with the sport derived out of a nation’s heritage.

The lumberjack show includes such events as ax throwing, chopping, log rolling, crosscut sawing, hot sawing and chainsaw carving.

These century old skills were used in the logging camps of North America. To pass the time, lumberjacks would challenge each other in head-to-head competitions.

"Although technology and machinery have replaced manual labor, the skills are used today by the Scheers in their lumberjack show." said Charlotte Gibson, director of the Pike Pioneer Museum.

Gibson said Scheer’s Lumberjack Show has been featured on ABC’s Wide World of Sports, TNN, ESPN Jeep Trails, Discovery Channel’s "The Travelers," MTV’s "The Real World," the Family Channel and the Outdoor Life Network.

"We are excited to have such an outstanding show come to the museum," Gibson said. "The show is being sponsored by Husgvarna and Hendricks Homecenters and we just can’t thank them enough for bringing Scheer’s Lumberjack Show to our area. This is a rare opportunity to see such a show live and we hope everyone will make their plans to be here for at least one of the shows."

Pioneer Day is scheduled from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Lumberjack show times are 11 a.m. and 1:30 and 4 p.m. Each show is about 45 minutes in length.

Admission for the day’s events is $5 for adults and $1 for students, including all students with a college ID.

"We wanted to make this show available to as many people as possible and we believe it is a show that will command the interests of adults and young people alike," Gibson said.

Even though the lumberjack show will be the center ring attraction, there will be plenty of other activities to enjoy throughout the day.

The activities include wagon and train rides, living history demonstrations, Native American hunting camps, spinning and weaving demonstrations, lye soap and hominy making, churning and quilting.

The Charles Henderson High School Band Boosters will offer a barbecue lunch on the grounds or the public is invited to bring picnic lunches. The picnic area has been expanded and can accommodate a large number of people.

The Charles Henderson Jazz Ensemble will entertain at the amphitheater in the afternoon.

And, if that’s not enough, the museum will be open for tours or just for browsing. And it’s all for the small price of admission.

"We invited everyone out to the museum Nov. 13 for a day of family fun and learning," Gibson said.
