I can tell you from experience a lot of people have kept Bright in office because they are afraid of how bad the other choices might be (yes, I lived there for almost 20 years). Montgomery is not known for rocking the boat when it comes to most mayoral elections. Bright has done a good job, don't get me wrong. But you also have to look at a few things. He did help raise the sales tax in Montgomery to 10% from 8% (I said "help", not that he did it on his own). Also, the attacks about Jay Love not offering health insurance to some of his employees... they worked at Subway! Most of the people who served me at his franchise locations looked young enough to still be on their parent's insurance. I am not promoting either candidate (frankly, I don't like either one) but these are two things I think people forget. I guess I should say something else positive about Bright... Eastchase would be my answer to that... and I suppose all of the riverfront development.

The city raised the tax originally, but the mayor is not able to vote on it, therefore I said he "helped" raise the tax (by 1%). However, Bright designed a budget for the next year which accounted for the increase in revenue and stated the he was supportive of the tax increase (I am not arguing that we didn't need more money in that town). There was also an increase in the lodging tax, but that was to fund the riverfront development. The county did later raise the tax which brought the total sales tax in the city to 10%, one of the highest in the nation. I obviously have missed Love raising taxes ( I hope you are not referring to the vote for Amendment 1 which allowed the PUBLIC to vote on it, not for the state to actually raise taxes... I assume he wanted to allow the public to decide if they wanted the tax increase or not). Like I said, I don't particulary like either candidate. I just want people who don't know anything about Montgomery or about the candidates to have an opinion from someone who isn't going to support either candidate. I don't trust political ads and I am talking about the things I know about, not what I have heard from someone else.
